2018 Side Hustle Income Report Month 9

I’ve been really hesitant to do this update!

You all know why. I did email Merch after my termination and gave them all the facts without any of the sob and they still decided to keep my account terminated.

So this will be my income report without that income. I’m still selling shirts on Etsy but it’s clearly not the same.

Meanwhile, I’m working on another website. Instead of designing T-shirts that serve no purpose in the great scheme of things (except to pad my bank account) I want to design helpful things that align with my passion: helping people get out of debt, couples get in sync with their finances, and anyone who feels isolated when starting to live simpler.

Right now I think that’s through printables/digitables, workbooks, and short ebooks. All less than $10. I have some ideas that I’m going to run with and you’ll all know the outcome by the end of the year!

Anyways, I’m rambling to avoid calculating these totals but I’m going to stop now and be a big girl…

Rest of the year’s reports:

My goal to become self-sufficient through online income is still on the table. It’s going to take some creative thinking but that’s never scared me before. And I’ll keep you updated every step of the way.

Airbnb: $829.35

We charge $37 per night on weekdays, $40 per night Fri and Sat, and a $12 cleaning fee. I mark nights down to $35 per night if we’re unbooked short notice. The room is in the front of the house and we let the people use the spare bathroom privately.

In September we were booked 20 nights over 5 stays so that averages out to just over $41 per night that we get. I cleaned 6 times and it takes me about 1-1.5 hours so I would equate Airbnb made us $92.15 per hour of work. Not bad.

T-Shirts: $85.96

Oof. Ouch. This one hurts. And you might remember last month I owed Etsy $21.39 so this number is more realistically $64.57.

At this time I don’t plan on building my Etsy store (At least not with T-shirts.) This could be the sadness talking but when I think about the projects that give me life, I think about writing, the podcast, and personal finance. Not t-shirts. I’m going to do more of what I love and less of the things that bring easy money.

Books: $976.96

These are my book earnings from July. I sold 302 copies of The No-Spend Challenge Guide and 23 copies of Meal Planning on a Budget.

In August I ran countdown deals on both books and did some publicity on them so I’m excited to see those results. NSCG was also on sale all September and became #1 in its primary category so I’m excited to see the next two months.

I’ve been running ads for both books since July and since I can’t figure out how to see month by month sales I will say I’ve netted $156.26 as a result of ads as of writing this which is $72.85 over last month.

Mystery Shopping: $12

We did one shop that reimbursed and paid $12. Haven’t been doing much mystery shopping since we’ve been so busy but I’m still on the lookout for the unique ones.

Blog: $34.64

Pretty light this month.

Travis’ Side Job: $8.53

Travis does some paperwork for a private jet owner and gets paid pretty well for a few hours of work. I guess he worked like 1 minute last month.

Total: $1,947

Total Passive Income: $1,097.56 (36% to Goal of $3K per month)

Expenses: I had FinCon this month so expenses are a tad high.

  • Book Ads: $11.14

Total: $360.10

Set aside for taxes: $396

September Grand Total: $1,190.90

2018 Running Total: $22,307.89

Goals for Q3 of 2018:

1. Grow the Frugal Friends Community. We’re still focusing on growing our podcast audience. I’ve been appearing on podcasts we’ve started a book club to increase engagement and reviews! We’re giving away a copy of our Book of the Month for every 5 reviews we get.

We’re also working with Cook Smarts to introduce people to an awesome service and hopefully build revenue that can pay for the podcast upkeep.

2. Build a New Website (and all the things that come with it.) New things mean a new brand and a new website. I’m through the planning stage and the rest of the year bring a lot of writing, designing, and building! I’ll share more in December but watch out for what’s to come!
